今年は開催できることになりました♪

今週の英語ブログは5月5日「こどもの日」についてです🎏

While the first day of Golden Week is Showa day, the last day is of course Children`s day. Childrens day in Japan is symbolized by the flying carp-shaped windsocks, usually in black, red and blue. Traditionally kashiwa mochi (sticky rice cakes filled with red bean paste and wrapped in oak leaves) and chimaki (sticky sweet rice wrapped in an iris or bamboo leaf) are eaten. While you most likely know all of this, and may have even told your teachers this in a NOVA class, have you ever taken the time to ask about foreign countries` Children`s Day?

In many western countries, it is common to collectively adopt international “holidays”, for example Children`s Day on November 20th. This day has been championed by some organizations such as UNICEF. This date marks the date in 1989 when children`s human rights were recognized during the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Some other countries may also celebrate national Children`s Day on April 12th. Unlike Japan, in many foreign countries, National Childrens Day may not be a national holiday or even really celebrated in any fashion for the average citizen. To be honest, most of the teacher`s here didn`t even know what day it was on!

今週の英語ブログはGWの祝日にちなんで
皇族（ロイヤルファミリー）について！

For many teachers, Golden week is their favorite holiday in Japan. Besides the time off, the weather isn`t too hot or too cold, and they can go out hiking to enjoy the flowers and lush forests. This year, most of the teachers have decided to stay local and not go too far from Hachioji.

The first day of Golden Week is of course Showa Day, which commemorates the birthday of the former Emperor Showa. For some of the teachers here, they too have a royal family, but not necessary directly linked to their country like the Japanese Royal Family. If, you haven’t guessed, I`m talking about the British Royal Family.

From Canada to Australia, the British Commonwealth is an organization of 54 independent countries that were formerly under British rule. While now, all 54 countries are self-governed, there are many symbolic images, and ceremonies that remind us of our link to Britain. For example, in Canada some of their money has the face of Queen Elizabeth II. There is also the Commonwealth Games, which are similar to the Olympics, but only allow the 54 countries. Some people really love to follow the gossip and news of the British Royal Family, while others never really pay attention to the tabloids.

今日のテーマはよく間違う英語表現、
ズバリ『和製英語』です！

英語だと思っていたけど、実は和製英語で
通じなかった・・・という経験をお持ちの方も
いるのではないでしょうか？？

英語学習をする上で、よりナチュラルな
実際に外国人が使っている英語を身につけたいですよね！

そのためにも、
ジャパニーズイングリッシュから脱却しましょう！

Japanese English Words

As you know many modern day Japanese words derive from foreign countries. We see countless examples of this throughout the language. Some examples that come to mind are the use of “konbini” (from the English word convenient store), and “buffe” (from the French word buffet) are just a couple of such examples.

While they often have the same meaning, there are some cases where the katakana Japanese version of English words have changed in meaning. Here are a list of some examples that some of the instructors have heard while teaching lessons.

Claimer — “kurema” (クレーマー)

In Japan, the use of “kurema” is used to describe someone who complains about something. However, in English, we would simply call someone who complains, “a complainer”. Like how we call someone who swims, “a swimmer”. So we often just add “er” to the end of a verb to get the word for the person who does that action. With this in mind, “a claimer” would be someone who claims. The verb, “to claim”, has many uses, and generally means “to state”, “to assert”, or “to request”. For example, “I’d like to claim my prize,” or in a legal case, “The defendant claims that, Mr.Jones stole his bicycle.”

Mansion — “manshon” (マンション)

If you think of the word mansion, the image of a tall apartment building somewhere in Toyko is probably what you’re imagining. Good for couples and small families, but not what you would expect the richest and most powerful people to call their home. In western culture, a mansion is a ridiculously large house, which you would find movie stars, or tech moguls like Mark Zuckerberg live in. They can often cost tens of millions of dollars, and feature things like indoor swimming pools, with countless numbers of rooms.

Tension — “tenshon” (テンション)

Some students here at the Hachioji branch have described the word “tension” as being the feeling of having an abundance of energy, in a positive way. However, the English version of tension is different. It is often used as a technical term, meaning to apply force by stretching, or is the state of being stretched. When we use for humans, it is a negative feeling, that refers to feeling mental or emotional strain. For example, if I say, “he is tense”, it often means he is stressed, slightly angered, or is feeling pressure. So the Japanese meaning has been flipped to almost the opposite meaning of the original.

Flowers Around The World

With the cherry blossom season come and gone in Tokyo, we thought here at the Hachioji branch we would introduce some of the popular flowers from some of the teachers’ home countries. While the cherry blossoms in Japan are quite famous internationally, some other countries like South Africa, Australia and Canada, may not have a flower that is quickly associated with the country. So we made a list of some of the most unique native flowers, from your favorite teachers`countries.

South Africa — The Barberton Daisy

A popular choice for organizations throughout South Africa. It is used as an emblem for sports teams and provinces’ flags throughout the country. The flower comes in a range of colors. From bright orange, to pink to yellow, these flowers are definitely a beautiful sight to be seen, coupled with there rather long petals.

Canada — The Blue Flag Iris

It was really hard not to choose the maple leaf or tree for this spot. While it is certainly the most recognizable plant from Canada, it isn`t quite a flower. So we decided to highlight a native flower of Canada, that one of our teachers really likes. That is the Blue Flag Iris, which typically blooms in late May or early June and grows to as tall as ninety center meters tall!

Australia — The Kangaroo paw

If the name doesn`t scream Australia, I don`t know what does! An absolutely gorgeous flower when in bloom, they can be singular, bi-colored or tri-colored, in a variety of colors: red, yellow, green, orange, pink and white. They have a unique tubular shape, and are low maintenance, great for the lazy gardener. The Kangaroo paw is the official state flower of Western Australia as well.

New Zealand — The Kowhai

The Kowhai flower is widely regarded as being the national flower of New Zealand, however it holds no official title. These flowers, like cherry blossoms grow in trees. They tend to grow near streams or lowlands. The Kowhai flowers are recognizable for their bright yellow color and the uniquely droopy, tubular shape.

The United States — The Rose

Roses are popular world wide, but I bet you didn`t know that the rose is the national flower of the USA. While most roses are native to the continent of Asia, there are many native

Now imagine a rabbit. No, not the pink NOVA usagi! Picture much older and one that brings colorful eggs to all the children. If you’re thinking of the Easter Bunny, then you’re correct!

If you aren’t too familiar or clear on what Easter Holiday is about, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. For many it is a fun holiday that is used as an excuse to get extended family together to celebrate and eat good food. Children often search for chocolates around the house or yard left by the Easter Bunny. Often times eggs are painted or dyed in variety of colors for decorative purposes.

While on the outside it may seem like an insignificant holiday, it actually holds an incredible amount of religious importance in Christianity. Easter marks the day Jesus (son of God), resurrected from the dead, which was described in the New Testament.

So why rabbits and eggs you might ask? Well at first it might seem strange, however hares, better known as rabbits have long been linked to the Virgin Mary (mother of Jesus). Eggs also have a long history connected to fertility and rebirth.

Besides chocolate for the children, there are many popular dishes that are served for Easter dinner. This ranges from country to country, but here are some staples: roasted asparagus, glazed ham, scalloped potatoes and hot cross buns. If you ever get invited over for Easter, don’t miss the chance for some good fun and a great meal!

🤡April Fools’ Day🤡

For many people, when they think of April certain images come to mind. Perhaps it’s the spring weather, beautiful flowers or Easter holiday, to name but a few. However, here at the Hachioji NOVA branch, the instructors are getting excited for a much more obscure holiday. That is April Fools’ Day, which occurs every year on 1^st of the month. Unlike Easter holiday which holds many religious values, April Fools’ is a much more lighthearted event.

The modern-day version of April Fool’s Day centers around the act of “pranking”. A prank, also known as a practical joke, is the when someone tries to make a friend or enemy look foolish in some way. Some classic examples include the use of whoopee cushions and fake bugs. It is customary to yell “April Fool’s”, once the prank is complete. These practical jokes are never meant to be harmful to their targets, and are simply meant to cause a good laugh.
