One of my favorite things about Japan is the cherry blossom season. I’m from Washington, DC, so I often saw cherry blossoms in my hometown since I was very young. Every spring, millions of people come to DC just to see the cherry blossoms, watch the cherry blossom parade, and check out the National Cherry Blossom Festival. There were lots of different activities: the kite festival, making origami, and watching Japanese celebrities perform on-stage. I was quite surprised when I moved to Japan, and noticed how the cherry blossom celebration was slightly different (but of course, still very fun!)

For example, in Japan, okonomiyaki and ramen are much cheaper. In DC, I remember paying at least $12 USD (before tax and tips) for a bowl of ramen or a plate of okonomiyaki from the food stalls. I was also impressed by the “Hanami” culture in Japan.

You see, in the US, there are very strict laws against drinking alcohol out in public. But here in Japan, it is completely safe and fun to enjoy all kinds of beverages and picnicking under the cherry blossom trees. Actually, the cherry blossom trees in Washington, DC were donated by the Japanese government hundreds of years ago, so they are very precious and well-protected by the park rangers in the area. I always knew how old and rare the trees were in the US, so I was always very careful around them. It was also quite rare to see anyone picnicking directly under the trees. Most people take pictures and enjoy sightseeing around the Tidal Basin or the National Mall among the cherry blossom trees.

To me, the cherry blossom season in DC is like a combination of the Japanese summer festival season and cherry blossom season. It’s a perfect blend of spring and summer, though in the US, fireworks usually happen on the 4th of July instead of continuous festivals like in Japan.

If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend coming to the National Cherry Blossom Festival in DC sometime. It’s quite special and unique, and very symbolic of the strong bond between the US and Japan. Also, it’s very Instagrammable!

Farrah
