Hello again,
I hope you are all doing well. It’s been a while since I last had a chance to write anything to you,but this evening I happened to have some free time and I thought you might like to read something about astronomy since we have a related holiday coming up in March.
There are four specific days every year that are important for the astronomical calendar, meaning how the earth movesthrough our solar system.
These days are the Vernal Equinox, the Summer Solstice, the Autumnal Equinox, and the Winter Solstice. In order to understand what these words mean, I need to talk about some Latin.
First, the words vernal, summer, autumnal, and winter all refer to each of the four seasonswith vernal being Latin for spring, and autumnal being Latin for fall.
Next is equi- which is from the Latin word aequi, which means “equal” and nox which is Latin for “night”.
And finally sol, which is the latin word for sun and stice which comes from the Latin word stit, which means stopped or stationary.
So, to put this all together, Vernal Equinox is the day in Spring on which the length of night (nox) is equal (equi) to the day.
Summer Solstice is the day on which the sun (sol) stops (stice)
at its highest point in the sky, making it the longest day of the year. Autumnal Equinox is the day in Fall on which the length of night is equal to the day.
And finally, Winter Solstice is the day on which the sun stops at its lowest point in the sky, making it the shortest day of the year.
Despite how interesting I think this is, many native speakers of English don’t know any of this. Mostly, this is because these days carry no religious or celebratory significance in the west. There are no holidays on these days, and to most people they are exactly the same as any other day of the year.
I’m happy to be living in a place that celebrates and recognizes these important days. So, I hope this year’s Vernal Equinox will bring you happiness and prosperity.
