There are lots of different ways to study a language. Today, I’d like to introduce the idea of studying a language like a baby!
Very few people remember their early years. Even if you don’t remember your very early childhood, I am sure that almost nobody used a textbook to learn their native language. How did you learn your native language? The answer is (probably) “input”! How can we use this to learn languages more effectively?
Firstly, by focusing on input, we can learn to say things naturally the first time. Grammar study is very important but many ideas can be expressed through a set phrase. In Japanese, “I want to go to the toilet,” is most natural. In English, “I need to go to the toilet,” is natural. This isn’t a difference in grammar; it’s just how people speak. The only way we can learn these natural expressions is through input.
Secondly, even if we can speak perfectly, if we can’t understand what people are saying to us, then we can’t have a conversation. I can’t count the number of times I’ve asked for directions in Japanese, only to not understand the reply! In some situations, listening is much more important than speaking.
Lastly, input helps our output. If we are good at listening, we can absorb the meaning and use of many new phrases. If we can read a book, we can learn plenty of new words. This helps our speaking too.
