Hello everyone!
Happy October! This is one of my favorite months because the weather is perfect for autumn activities such as apple picking, visiting farms, and getting ready for Halloween. Every year, Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. It is a popular holiday in America that is decorated with white ghosts, black cats, and pumpkin jack o’ lanterns.
Where I am from (New York, USA), people celebrate Halloween by wearing costumes and going to Halloween themed parties at homes, bars, and various restaurants. Children can celebrate on the night of October 31st when they wear their costumes and walk around their neighborhoods with their friends and families to go trick or treating. It is a tradition where they go to people’s homes and say Trick or Treat! to get candy and little toys. My favorite Halloween candies from America are Milky Way (soft caramel milk chocolates) and Twizzlers (soft red candies that are chewy and sweet). My favorite childhood memories of Halloween are going trick or treating with my friends, and trading candies with my brother at home. I have never celebrated Halloween in Japan, but I am so excited to do so this year! I am planning to go to Halloween Horror Night at USJ with my friends. I am a little nervous it will be too scary, but I am excited to see the many characters such as Hello Kitty, Snoopy, and the Minions in their Halloween costumes! What are some other Halloween traditions in Japan? Please tell me!
How do YOU celebrate Halloween?
- Rin K (New York, USA /Japan)
More and more Japanese people are becoming curious about Halloween nowadays; and how it is celebrated in America. You even see more people celebrate Halloween in Japan by dressing up and partying in main streets like Shibuya, Tokyo or Dontonbori, Osaka. However, this holiday is celebrated very differently in the U.S.
Usually kids dress up in costumes, walk around their neighborhood and knock on doors asking for candy. This is called trick or treating. Adults sometimes dress up and attend house parties with their peers, drinking, or eating sweets as well..
Because America is so diverse, other cultures celebrate Halloween differently as well. For example, some cultures such as Mexicans or Filipinos refer to Halloween as `Day of the Dead`. Day of the Dead is also very similar to Obon week. This means that families get together to celebrate other family members that passed away by going to there gravesite to lay out food or presents.
いかがでしたか?😋
