The reason I specifically highlight the situation at Manchester City and the Saudi League is because of, of course, the oil money that has changed the landscape of football in the last 2 decades or so. The Chinese Super League, not so long ago, also threatened to gain a foothold at the top of professional football with all the money they were offering to top players. But they were quickly overshadowed by the Saudi League who look to genuinely position themselves as one of the biggest leagues in the world. Cristiano Ronaldo plays his trade in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr FC and since his high-profile move there, a whole host of some of the world’s top and most famous talents have made the big-money move to the middle east, including Karim Benzema, Neymar and Sadio Mane.
