Whilst we don’t have Golden Week in Jersey, we do have one important national holiday at the start of May – Liberation Day. Before World War 2, Jersey had been at the centre of many historic battles between England and France, but was then occupied by Germany. At the end of World War 2, Jersey was liberated from German rule and was declared independent from the UK.

This is a very important holiday for many islanders as they spent their childhood under German occupation, so the day is a designated public holiday for people to celebrate with their families.

Typically, there is a festival and re-enactment of the liberation in Liberation Square, where a statue stands to commemorate the event. Many traditional foods like Jersey Wonders (a sweet, fried bread) and of course Jersey Ice-Cream are eaten on the day.
