Hi! This is Tim from JR Ibaraki Nova.
With February just around the corner, many people are getting ready for the popular celebration of Valentine’s Day! A lot of students ask me what Valentine’s Day is like in the US so I thought it might be an interesting things to talk to you about.
In the USA, Valentine’s Day is mostly just a day for couples to demonstrate their affection for each other by exchanging cards, buying gifts, or going on a romantic date. Gifts could be chocolates, but people often give other things. Flowers, jewelry, and nice clothing are all popular choices.
It’s not so usual for us to give chocolates to our coworkers, which is very different from how the holiday is celebrated in Japan. This means that White Day in March is also not celebrated, in fact most people probably don’t know about it.
School children also often have Valentine’s parties at school and give cards to their classmates. Candy hearts are a very typical confection enjoyed by children at this time.
How about you? What do you like about Valentine’s Day? Or maybe it’s not your favorite holiday? Please stop by JR Ibaraki Nova for a lesson and let me know what you think about Valentine’s Day!
