A moveable feast is a holiday that doesn’t have a fixed date. Some holidays, like Christmas, are always the same day. In the case of Christmas, December 25th. But others, like Easter, are not the same day every year. Last year, for example, Easter was on March 31st but this year, it’s on April 20th. Why? Well, that’s very complicated but basically, the date is a result of a lunisolar calendar, which is a combination of the solar year and the moon phase. It is supposed to be the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, the day in spring when night and day are almost equal, but the lunar and solar calendars don’t always match, which leads to different days.
As for what we do, some people boil eggs and then paint them bright colours while others just buy chocolate eggs (or rabbits) and then hide them for their kids to find. Why eggs and rabbits? Because rabbits are very fertile, having many babies and eggs are the beginning of new life, both of which symbolize spring, the rebirth of the earth. That and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is the real purpose of Easter. Believe or not, for hundreds of years, and even now in Latin countries, Easter is the main Christian holiday, much more so than Christmas, which is both German and only about five hundred years old.
