Lately, it seems like everyone has been playing Monster Hunter. Hunting monsters is fun and all, but my favorite part is the animal companions. The dogs and cats are so cute! In English, the dogs are called Palamutes and the cats are called Palicoes. They’re a mix of the word “Pal” and the words “Malamute” and “Calico”, which are breeds of dogs and cats respectively.This is a localization – when a word or phrase is changed for a different audience so to convey the same meaning or feeling, even if not the exact same definition.
Another example would be how most Pokemon names are changed for different languages – “Hitokage” is “Charmander” in English, a combination of “char”, to burn, and “salamander”, a kind of lizard. The English version of Crayon Shinchan doesn’t localize names, but instead jokes – Japanese pop culture references would just be confusing to an American audience, so instead they replace them with equivalent American pop culture jokes.
Do you know of any localizations, either in Japanese media translated to other languages, or media from other countries translated into Japanese? I hear “Palicoes” are called “Otomoairu” and “Palamutes” are “Otomogaruku” in Japanese – what do those names mean?

Hi everybody! How was your Golden Week? This Golden Week was pretty quiet for me as it fell during the State of Emergency so I didn’t really want to go anywhere where there were too many people.I had a bit of a “densha otaku” Golden Week taking pictures of some trains. I’m not a huge train fan but it seems such a big thing in Tokyo that I thought I’d better get some shots to add to my collection.

First I went to Yurakucho to take some shots of the sleek Shinkansen (bullet trains) cruising into Yurakucho station.Then I went to Ochanomizu to take some shots of the trains crossing the Kanda River.While there I also visited Yushima Seido,a Confucian temple which has a large statue of Confucius and some cool scary looking tiger statues on the roof.

Mostly I just relaxed at home though and it seems that was what a lot of students did too.It was a good time to spend time with family,sleep in and recharge before getting back into work.Even though Tokyo is such an energetic bustling city, full of things to do and see, sometimes it’s just nice to kick back and take it easy for a few days.Hope you had a nice Golden Week!

Hi, everybody! My name is Thomas Lipschultz, but please call me Tom. I’m from the United States of America Specifically, I’m from the state of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania isn’t very well-known in Japan, but in America, it’s quite famous: it was one of the first states, and was very important in the founding of the country back in the 1700s. For me, however, it will always be most famous for its delicious soft pretzels and a sugary soda called “birch beer“!

I’ve been interested in Japan since I was a child, because I watched a lot of anime and played a lot of Japanese video games on my Nintendo systems. When I went to college, I studied Japanese there, and I first visited Japan through a school exchange program in the June, 2000. My college has a sister school in Miyagi, Tohoku Gakuin University, so I studied there for 3 weeks that summer. I fell in love with Japan and knew I wanted to live and work there.

After college, I taught English at two junior high schools in Miyagi, then went back home to the U.S. and worked at computer game companies for almost 16 years. It was fun, but I missed Japan very much, so I decided to come back in 2019. Now, I live in Kichijoji, and I teach English through Nova so that you all can have more opportunities to explore the world and make wonderful memories for yourself like I am now. Living and working in another country is just so much fun!

“Stopping to smell the roses” is a common English phrase for being able to slow down and enjoy life. Life anywhere has its busy times and hopefully small opportunities to “stop and smell the roses.” Nature has a rare beauty for us and our eyes are made for enjoying it. Scattered sunrays through the tree leaves and the grass fields decorated with fallen camellia of red and white blends calms us. Nothing else on earth enjoys art of nature like we do or discusses the beauty of composition such as Japanese maple trees cascading over a body of water. Life is ever-complex and always amazing from the micro to the macro scale. The most simplest cell breaks atoms and utilizes quantum physics on a scale that leave our top scientist in amazement. From the patterns and textures of the bark on trees to the fragrance of flowers that bloom in various seasons nature has its own exhibit and various parts of the world have there own particular blend of style waiting for us to stop, enjoy, and relax with. Please take time to stop, smell the roses, and think about things at a slower pace and on a deeper level.

Hi❕ I`m Callum. I`m from Melbourne, currently the second largest city in Australia and expected to be the largest by 2026.I came to Japan to learn more about Japanese culture and to explore as many places as possible. I`ve visited many prefectures in Japan and plan to go to Kyushu next. My hobbies include painting, playing guitar and writing songs, photography, Japanese history, cycling, reading and travelling. On my days off I like to cycle to historic places around Tokyo and Kanagawa, when I have time.I also like taking photos around Tokyo and eating at my favourite restaurants. Hello! Have you cooked anything good recently? The other day, a NOVA student taught me how to make a very simple sashimi rice bowl recipe. Just heat and mix together some soy sauce, mirin, sesame oil, and cooking sake. Cool down the mixture and marinate some sashimi with it for at least 15 seconds and add whatever toppings you like. I recommend sesame seeds, avocado, or green onions. Serve over a bowl of fresh rice and BOOM!! A beautiful lunch or dinner! I made this two days in a row because it was so delicious. Then, today I cooked some shrimp and asparagus pasta in a basil tomato sauce. Delish. If you are looking for new ideas to make for dinner, here are a couple of suggestions!

Exercise/Weight training

Physical exercise is one of the most important things in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is not only helpful to manage weight/physical appearence but it can also help with stress relief and mental performance. As a general goal, we should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity everyday in order to maintain or lose weight. Personally, my primary focus is on “body building” so I go to the gym 5 or 6 times per week, following a “push”, “pull” and “legs” routine. For example, on my “push” days I focus on pushing exercises such as the bench press and shoulder press which primarily works the chest, shoulders and triceps. On my “pull” days I focus on pulling exercises such as pull ups/lat pull downs and rows which primarily works the back and biceps. Finally on “leg” days I focus on leg exercises such as squats and leg extensions, although to be honest I hate leg days.
No matter what your exercise routine is, from a strict gym routine to short walks/runs, all that matters is that your being active and moving your body. A healthy body, a healthy mind.

Selfie. A selfie is a picture that you take of yourself especially by using the camera on your smartphone. Usually either holding your phone in your outreached hand in front of yourself or by using a selfie stick.
Selfies are often shared on social media, via social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram.
I read somewhere that the origin of selfie stems from Japanese purikura culture and the first selfie stick was invented by a couple of employees at Minolta but it didn’t catch on at that time.

Usage example:
A: What would you do if you met a famous person?
B: I would definitely snap a selfie with them.

How much do you know about Easter? Here are a couple of things about the holiday that you might find interesting.
Easter is a Christian holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, which occured on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion-an ancient form of execution in which a person was nailed or bound to a cross.
It is preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance-the turning away from sin and turning to faith in God. Many people choose to give up something, give to charity or volunteer during the 40 days.
So, why do people color eggs for this holiday?
The egg is an ancient symbol of new life and rebirth. In Christianity it became associated with Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection.
The custom of the Easter egg originated in the early Christian community when people stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ that was shed at his crucifixion. And it is said that for some Christians, the Easter egg is a symbol of the empty tomb.
According to Wikipedia, the oldest tradition was to use dyed chicken eggs. The modern custom is to use dyed eggs too, but also decorated chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with candy such as jellybeans. People enjoy these candies and sweets at Easter after having abstained from them during the preceding forty days of Lent.
And, Did you know that Easter is an annual holiday but the date changes every year. It does always fall on a Sunday, though. Basically, Easter Sunday is the first Sunday following the first full moon after the first day of spring.
This year the vernal equinox was on March 20th, the first full moon after that date March 28th making the following Sunday, April 4, Easter 2021.
