さて年末年始は皆さんいかがお過ごしでしたでしょうか？
スタッフの私、萱場は年末に風邪をこじらせてしまい少し残念な正月となってしまいました…（今は回復し、校舎にて皆様をお待ちしております）
日本の正月と言えば初詣や駅伝など挙げられますが外国だと違った過ごし方をしているのはご存知でしょうか？
今回はイギリス出身のAlastair先生に現地だとどう過ごしていたか
教えて頂きました！
New Years in the United Kingdom
In the UK, we celebrate the New Year quite differently. On New Year`s Eve, people up and down the country throw New Year`s parties. They invite lots of friends to their house, sometimes for a meal, but almost always for a drink after dinner as well. People drink and play games until late in the night, often leaving at 3 or 4 am, or staying over at the host`s house afterwards. Other people go out to pubs and night clubs for New Year`s. This is popular with young people, but can be much more expensive than going to a party. The night clubs are also very busy, so there are very long queues to get inside. Once inside, the people celebrating in clubs also stay out until very late at night. Because of this, in London, the trains run all night at New Year`s so that everyone can get home after the celebrations.
There is a huge fireworks display in central London at midnight. Lots of fireworks are set off from the London Eye and every year big crowds gather on the other side of the river Thames to watch the fireworks display. Many other people in London go to hills and other high places to try and see the fireworks. The fireworks display is also broadcast on the BBC and most people at parties usually watch it on TV. Some night clubs even show the fireworks.
At midnight, people also sign “Auld Lang Syne” (a song based on a poem by Robert Burns). They link arms with the people around them and sing. This happens at parties, in night clubs, in pubs, and in the crowds watching the fireworks outside.
After the celebrations, many people in the UK make “New Year`s Resolutions”. We think about things we want to do differently this year. Many people in the UK decide to drink less alcohol, for example. As such, many people try not to drink any alcohol for the whole of January. This is called “Dry January”. Many other people decide to do more exercise. As a result, gym memberships are often very expensive in the UK in January.
