🗽Summer in New York🗽

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です🍔

本日はニューヨーク4年住んでいたKenneth先生が夏のニューヨークについてお話ししてくれました🍟

Summer in New York

Summer in Japan and summer in New York are like complete opposites. In that sense, summer in New York is a lot more like it is in Japan, but it’s not quite as extreme. In New York, it gets a bit humid during the summer and rains on occasion, but nothing like the rainy season in Japan. Rain showers aren’t nearly as sudden or unpredictable either, and the temperature just isn’t as hot.
I don’t miss the New York City subway system in summer though. Most of the subway stations in NYC don’t have air conditioning, and being underground, they’re well insulated and quickly build up heat with all the people and machinery down there. It’s not to bad in winter, but during summer it’s like stepping into an oven. Add to that the fact that the subway trains are hardly ever on schedule, there’s rarely signboards telling you when the next train will arrive, and people don’t hesitate to complain loudly about the heat or the wait, and standing on a subway platform in summer can quickly become one of the most unpleasant experiences in New York! It really makes you appreciate how nice the trains in Japan are.
Still, I miss the street markets and festivals celaebrating all kinds of different cultures with different kinds of food and entertainment. Walking down the street between the skyscrapers while loud music plays and you eat some food from a country you’ve never visited can be one of the best experiences you ever have in New York. They really have everything there.

電車に冷房がないなんて考えられませんよね😓💦

ニューヨークには観光客も含め様々な人がいて、たくさんの文化に触れられることができる街だと思います👨👩

是非、池袋西口校でKenneth先生に日本とニューヨークの夏の違いを教えてあげてください🗽🗻

🌴Summer in Miami🌴

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です🥵

本日はMiami出身のLance先生が夏のMiamiについてお話ししてくれました🌴

Happy June, everyone! 🎈I hope you’re enjoying the hot weather! Don’t you just love it? The sun is out, the wind is blowing, and ice cream tastes extra delicious this time of year.
In my hometown, Miami, summers are very hot and humid. However, to combat the heat we spend a lot of time in the swimming pool or going to the beach. Miami Beach is in downtown Miami where the restaurants are delicious and the atmosphere is electric. A lot of people like to drink and dance the night away to Latin music.

暑くて水をかぶっているふりをしているLance( ´∀` )

皆さんは、今年の夏は何をする予定ですか?
Miamiのきれいなビーチに行ってみたいですね✨

今年もコロナ禍の夏にはなるとは思いますが、頑張りましょう😧💪

🌼The Language of Flowe🌼

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です☺

本日はJoe先生が““についての英語の言葉を教えてくれました🌷

The Language of Flowers

One of my favorite things about Japan is the wonderful variety of beautiful plants and flowers you can find. I love the language of flowers (“hanakotoba“) and what each flower signifies. With each passing season I look forward to seeing all the different new flowers bloom and appreciating their meaning.
In March I felt lucky to see Cherry Blossoms (Sakura) blowing around Shinjuku Gyoen in the wind. Cherry Blossoms are said to express kindness, gentleness and transcience.
Last month I enjoyed the Moss Phlox (Shibazakura) displays in Hitsujiyama Park in Chichibu. All the different shades of pink were super beautiful! Moss Phlox are said to represent harmony, partnership and unity.
Rainy season will arrive in Japan soon which means I can see some of my favorite flowers, Hydrangea (Ajisai). Last year I visited the long road filled with thousands of blue, purple and pink Hydrangea next to Asukayama Park. If possible, I would love to visit Meigetsu-in in Kamakura this year. Hydrangea represent pride.
Here are some more of my favorite flowers you can find in Japan with their names and meanings in English. What ones do you like the most?

Azalea (Tsutsuji) Patience and modesty
Forget-me-not (Wasurenagusa) True love
White Lily (Shirayuri)Purity
Tiger Lily (Oniyuri)Wealth
Sunflower (Himawari)Radiance and respect
Lotus (Renge)Purity and distance
Peony (Botan) Bravery
Violet (Sumire)Honesty

🔥Some tips for improving your vocabulary🔥

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です👓

本日はRobert先生ボキャブラリーを増やすためのヒントをくれました📚

Here are some tips for improving your vocabulary.

1) Read. Vocabulary building is easiest when you see words in context. Seeing words appear in a magazine or a newspaper article is more helpful than seeing them appear on vocabulary lists. I also recommend turning on the English subtitles or Closed Caption when watching you favorite shows or videos on Youtube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. Not only do you gain exposure to unfamiliar words, but you also see how they’re used.

2) Use the dictionary and thesaurus to find some synonyms and antonyms for any new words you learn.

3) Play word games. Classic games like Scrabble or crossword puzzles can function as a fun way to expand your English vocabulary.

4) Use flashcards. In today’s day and age, smartphone apps make flashcards convenient and easy to organize. Aiming for one new word a day is reasonable. You can always go for more, but it may not be a good idea to attempt to learn a lot of English words every single day.

5) Subscribe to “word of the day” feeds. Some web platforms will provide you with a word a day—either on a website, an app, or via email—to help you expand your vocabulary. You can check your thesaurus for some synonyms and antonyms and add these words to your flashcard word lists.

6) This is very important! It’s possible to have a huge vocabulary without actually knowing how to use the words. For that reason, you have to practice the words in conversation. This not only helps you not to forget the word, but you can practice the art of word choice. You could try by experimenting with the new words in Nova lessons. With a little bit of trial and error, and the help of Nova teachers, you will be able to hone in on the right word for a particular context.

単語を覚えるのってとても大変ですよね💦

勉強の方法はたくさんあると思いますが、
Robert先生が言っているように会話で使うことが一番大切です❕❕👀

是非、池袋西口校で沢山の先生たちとレッスンをして単語を勉強しましょう🔥

🌟Interesting thing about English🌟

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です🌠

本日はアメリカ出身Lance先生interesting thing about Englishについてお話ししてくれました😝

Hello!
Here’s an interesting thing about English:
When writing messages or comments on social media, you can say “I’m crying” to mean “I’m laughing so hard” or to mean “This made me so happy.” Sometimes we say “I’m crying” to mean happiness because we laughed so hard that tears came out of our eyes from joy. Have you ever cried from laughing? I have. It’s a great feeling. Sometimes my friends and I laugh so hard we can’t see anything because our eyes get so watery.
Do you know what “I can’t” means? Of course it means, “できない” but there are also many other meanings. Did you know that “I can’t” can also mean “that is so amazing, I’m speechless.” For example, on YouTube there are many amazing music videos and dancing videos. When the videos are so fantastic, many people will write comments like “I can’t” to mean that they thought the video was so incredible.

爆笑しているフリをしているLance先生(* ´艸`)

皆さんは, “I’m crying” “I can’t” means?をご存知でしたか❓

日本語にもシチュエーションによって意味が変わる言葉がたくさんありますよね😄
Lance先生は日本語を勉強中なので、是非教えてあげてください(^_-)-☆

👅English Tongue Twisters👅

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です🐓

本日は金曜日Tom先生Tongue Twistersについてお話ししてくれました👅

English Tongue Twisters Help With Pronunciation
by Thomas Lipschultz

I love studying languages, and have spent a lot of time studying Japanese. One of my favorite things to study is “tongue twisters.” What are tongue twisters? Well, in Japanese, a classic example is: あの客はよくかき食う客だ. We have tongue-twisters in English, too, and they’re really great for practicing English pronunciation. For example, can you say this one?
“She sells seashells by the seashore.”
That’s the most famous one in English, I think. But my favorite one to teach people in Japan is:
“Red leather, yellow leather.”
Try copying this into Google Translate and clicking the button to hear it spoken, then try repeating it. If you can say this like Google does, it means you’ve mastered the difference between R and L sounds in English, and you’re very good at saying TH sounds, too. And if you can say it quickly, three times in a row, then maybe you speak English better than even native speakers do!
Another favorite of mine is:
“Ed had edited it.”
If an American says this one naturally, it sounds like, エデデデデデ, because Americans like to skip or combine sounds when they speak. It’s really interesting, and a little funny, don’t you think?
If you want to become better at pronouncing English, try saying some tongue twisters sometime. You might have a lot of fun, and I think next time you come to NOVA for a lesson, the teacher will notice that your pronunciation has improved a lot!

😓Connotative Meaning😓

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です🐞

本日は火曜日の先生、目がとっても青いJake先生
同じ意味を持つ言葉についてお話ししてくれました🍀

Connotative Meaning

Choosing the right word can be very important. Whilst sometimes words might have the same or similar literal meaning, they may have different connotative meaning. The connotative meaning is the meaning that is implied or suggested by a particular word. It is the feeling that a word evokes. A words connotation can be positive, negative or neutral.

For example: How would you describe someone who doesn’t like to spend money? Would you say they are frugal or cheap? Thrifty or stingy? Saving or miserly? Whilst all these words have the same meaning, their connotations are different. Frugal and thrifty both have a positive connotation whilst cheap, stingy and miserly all have a negative one. Saving has a neutral connotation,

Another example: Let’s say I want to compliment my friend on how the look. Do I say they look slim or sknny? If I say they look slim, they’ll hopefully feel complimented. But if I say they look skinny, they’ll probably feel insulted.

There are many more examples, so make sure to use the right word lest you accidentaly give offense.

言葉はとても難しいですよね。。。😅
同じ意味でもいい意味になったり、悪い意味になったり😓

英語でもそのような同じ意味をもつ単語がたくさんあります😵

間違えて使ってしまわないよう、是非Jake先生に聞いてみてください❕❕✨

🐦connected speech🐦

Hi!NOVA池袋西口校です🦋

本日はイギリス出身Joe先生connected speechについて説明してくれました🌼

Connected speech in natural spoken English

A common problem even the most advanced learners of English as a second language encounter is difficulty understanding native speakers who speak very quickly. It is likely that when travelling to an English-speaking country, or watching movies and television, students will hear English at a speed much faster than how they were taught. Even in formal situations, most natural spoken English will feature a variety of examples of connected speech, which includes omitting certain vowel sounds, bridging words together, or changing certain syllables completely. A good and common example of this to consider is the following two sentences, and just how many ways they can be spoken by a native English speaker:

First, without any connected speech:

“I am going to go to the shop. Do you want anything?”

Next, with the most basic and common uses of connected speech:

“I’m gonna go to the shop. D’ya want anything?”

A little more:

“I’muna go t’da shop. Jya wan’ anyfing?”

And a much more extreme (but still very common!) example:

Ima go shop, yawanannyfing?”

Difficult, isn’t it! Being able to comprehend connected speech and abbreviated forms of words is one of the hardest hurdles to overcome when learning a second language. And especially English with its many accents and dialects. It takes time so try to be patient and not to worry too much about it. You’ll get there! Don’t hesitate to ask your teacher for examples of how some sentences and phrases you learn can sound like with more connected speech at a natural speed.
